`Rizzoli & Isles' Continues Fast Ratings Start

TNT's freshman drama series Rizzoli & Isles proved last night that it doesn't need help from The Closer  to maintain its fast ratings start.
Rizzoli & Isles' 10 p.m. episode outperformed its lead-in The Closer last night, averaging 7.2 million viewers for its second episode compared to the 6.9 milion viewers tuning into the Kyra Sedgwick-starrer series at 9 p.m. according to Turner Research.
The July 12 premiere of Rizzoli & Isles averaged 7.6 million viewers,  a record for a scripted series premiere. The second episode of Rizzoli & Isles also bested The Closer in key audience demos, households (5.3 million vs. 5.2 million) adults 18-49 (1.9 million vs. 1.6 million) and adults 25-54 (2.7 million vs. 2.2 million)
Based on the crime novels by best-selling author Tess Gerritsen, the crime drama stars Harmon and Alexander as Boston detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles -- good friends who together solve crimes.
The July 19 episode of The Closer, starring Golden Globe winner and current Emmy-nominee Sedgwick, was up 8% compared to the second episode of season five, according to Turner.
