Monday night's premiere of TNT's new drama series Rizzoli & Isles is now the most watched, commercially-supported, original scripted series debut in cable, averaging 7.6 million viewers.
Only TNT's September 2008 commercial-free premiere of Raising The Bar, which averaged 7.7 million viewers, outdrew the July 12 debut of Rizzoli & Isles, according to Turner officials.
The series stars Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander as Boston detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles - characters based on the Tess Gerritsen-authored crime novels of the same name.
The series also pulled impressive numbers in several key demos, including adults 18-49 (2 million), and 25-54 (2.7 million).
Rizzoli & Isles benefited from its lead-in, the sixth season premiere of cable's most popular scripted series, The Closer. The Kyra Sedgwick-starrer averaged 7.7 million viewers - an increase of 7% over its June 2009 fifth season debut.
Among key adult demos, The Closer averaged 1.9 million adults 18-49 and 2.6 million adults 25-54.
"The tremendous viewer response to Rizzoli & Isles is very gratifying," said Michael Wright, executive vice president and head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM) in a statement. "Rizzoli & Isles is shaping up to be a great companion for The Closer, which continues to deliver extraordinary numbers in its sixth season on our network."
