Scientific-Atlanta Inc. is looking to extend the reach of optical-networking
signals with a new transmitter addition to its "Prisma II" product line.
The Prisma II 1550-nanometer "Extended Reach" externally modulated
transmitter can pump video and data signals up to 60 kilometers without needing
to install new lasers. Redundancy features in the transmitter may also eliminate
the need for optical switches.
The transmitter can be used for point-to-point or point-to-multipoint
"This addition to the Prisma II family gives operators even greater
flexibility in video and data delivery based on the design and demands of their
network," S-A vice president of marketing and network architectures Paul
Connolly said in a release.
"The Prisma II Extended Reach EMT works with the carrier-class Prisma II
platform to reliably transmit large volumes of high-quality video and data in a
scalable manner, making service rollouts fast and simple," he
