Citing high demand for digital services, Scientific-Atlanta Inc. said it will
boost 'Explorer' digital set-top-box production at its facility in Juarez,
Mexico, to 6 million units per year by the end of the current quarter, marking
the fifth time the company has hiked production since June 1999.
Once capacity is increased at the 340,000-square-foot plant, S-A will churn
out an average of 115,000 boxes per week, the company said.
S-A said it shipped 1.11 million set-tops during its second fiscal quarter,
up from 1.03 million in the previous period. Of those, about one-half were S-A's
higher-capacity '3000' and '3100' models. The company also reported a backlog of
2.1 million units by quarter's end.
So far, S-A has shipped almost 5 million Explorer boxes, including its
'2000,' 3000, '2100' and 3100 models.
The company's latest introduction, the 'Explorer 8000,' will feature an
on-board hard drive for personal-video-recording capabilities.
