Scientific-Atlanta Inc. and Cox Communications Inc. took yet another step
into retail distribution of digital-cable gear, announcing a deal with Best Buy
Co. Inc. to offer high-definition boxes in Phoenix starting this week.
Under the deal, Cox will market its digital-cable package and high-definition
service at all Phoenix Best Buy outlets, which includes the S-A "Explorer 3100
HD" set-top. The set-top will sell for $499, with an introductory $50
Customers will sign up for service at the store and take the box home, where
they will complete activation by calling a Cox customer-service number.
"We have already had strong success with HDTV set-tops through the MSO
channel, and adding the choice of consumer ownership with Cox and Best Buy
should further accelerate HDTV adoption," said Michael P. Harney, S-A's
