With interactive-TV systems slowly deploying in the United States,
Scientific-Atlanta Inc. literally turned its eye to the international market
with a system aimed specifically at cable operators outside of North
Starting in December, the Atlanta-based cable-gear maker is offering overseas
cable operators the 'EyeQ,' a complete system able to meld their Digital Video
Broadcast systems with interactive-TV services.
The system will allow operators to bring up services such as video-on-demand,
network-based personal video recording, electronic mail, Internet and
subscription-gaming services at a low cost.
It also contains the plug-ins for integration with other interactive
offerings from Liberate Technologies and OpenTV Corp., among others.
The full system includes DVB headend equipment, a conditional-access system,
an interactive control computer, interactive set-top boxes, middleware and an
interactive program guide.
Overseas cablers can also tap the company's SciCare Broadband Services unit
for installation, training, maintenance and technical support.
