S-A Unveils Two New Boxes

Orlando, Fla. -- Scientific-Atlanta Inc. introduced two new set-tops -- the
'Explorer 4100' and 'Explorer 3100HD' -- fleshing out its overall digital-box
road map.

S-A, which made the announcement at the Cable-Tec Expo here, is spinning the
4100 as a home gateway designed to handle wired and wireless home-networking
links to televisions, PCs, personal digital assistants and other Internet

The 4100 -- which touts two tuners and a Data Over Cable Service Interface
Specification modem among its features -- will become S-A's 'flagship' set-top
box, a company official predicted.

Meanwhile, the 3100HD will harness high-definition-television signals via
component outputs, functioning as a 'network computer,' the company said.

S-A's '2000HD' also handles high-definition, but it was originally built as
an interim solution and it was shipped in relatively low volumes, an S-A
spokesman said.

S-A's latest duo joins thin-client models such as the '2100' and '3100' and
thicker, more advanced boxes like the 'Explorer 6000' and 'Explorer 8000.' The
8000 features an on-board hard drive for digital-video-recording
