Saskatchewan Telecommunications has tapped Kasenna Inc. to provide video-on-demand-server software.
Kasenna will supply its "MediaBase XMP" software to manage, distribute and deliver SaskTel's VOD content across Sun Microsystems Inc. servers.
The Canadian telco launched video services in nine cities last year using digital subscriber line. The company expects its video-subscriber count to reach 50,000 by 2005. SaskTel will deploy servers in multiple locations but manage content centrally.
In other technology news, Scientific-Atlanta Inc. said Oceanic Time Warner Cable has rolled out its "Prisma" digital transport system, connecting cable plant on Oahu, Maui, Hawaii and Kauai via an undersea fiber-optic link.
And Optinel Systems said it is releasing its "Plexis 10 Gigabit Ethernet Transport Platform," providing 10 GB per wavelength for video, voice and data services.
