SBC Communications Inc. has taken the lead in the second-quarter
new-broadband-subscriber derby, racking up 304,000 new digital-subscriber-line
customers and posting its sixth straight quarterly growth increase.
It is the most new subscriber additions for any provider in the industry so
far, with Comcast Corp.’s earnings set for release July 31.
It also marked the most DSL additions for SBC, vaulting over the previous
high mark set last quarter at 270,000.
That brings SBC’s DSL-subscriber head count to 2.8 million, a 60% increase
compared with the same period last year. The DSL-penetration rate in its
14-state territory stands at 9%, 12% in California. DSL now is available in 66%
of SBC’s footprint.
The Baby Bell posted revenues -- excluding its 60% ownership in Cingular
Wireless -- of $10.2 billion, a drop from the $10.8 billion posted in the second
quarter of 2002. Operating expenses for the quarter totaled $8.5 billion, down
from the $8.7 billion posted a year ago.
