SBC Communications Inc. added a record 504,000 digital-subscriber-line customers in the first quarter, to reach 5.6 million units, while it added 71,000 Dish Network direct-broadcast satellite subscribers, to reach 394,000.
DSL and wireless growth helped to fuel a 2.4% increase in revenue to $10.2 billion. Earnings were $885 million after merger-related expenses relating to Cingular Wireless.
SBC said 64% of its phone customers took one other service, up from 50% a year ago. The company reported 16,000 additions in primary lines, its best quarter in five years.
SBC also said it had begun limited field trials of its Internet-protocol-TV service.
