Sci Fi Channel has renewed its red-hot Battlestar Galactica series for a second season.
The premiere installments of the show -- the highest-rated original series in the network’s history -- have averaged a 2.4 Nielsen Media Research household mark (2.97 million viewers) since bowing Jan. 14.
Battlestar Galactica has vaulted Sci Fi into cable’s top spot among adults 25-54 on Friday nights, averaging nearly 2.09 million of those viewers.
The second season -- which is slated to premiere this summer and again anchor the network’s “Sci Fi Friday” block of originals -- will have 20 episodes.
Network officials said the entire cast -- including Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff, Jamie Bamber, James Callis, Tricia Helfer and Grace Park -- will return.
Battlestar Galactica is produced by NBC Universal Television Studios, in association with Sky One.
