Senate Panel Drops Violence Hearing

The Senate Commerce Committee has scrapped a hearing on media violence
scheduled for next Wednesday as the panel, headed by Ernest Hollings (D-S.C.),
shifts its focus to terrorist threats on U.S. aviation.

'It's canceled for now,' Hollings spokesman Andy Davis said. 'In the wake of
the Sept. 11 events, they are very much focusing on safety and security

The Hollings panel oversees the media and transportation industries. Davis
said that although Hollings remains committed to his media agenda, the senator's
focus for the time being would remain on airline security.

Nevertheless, Davis added, a hearing planned for Oct. 3 on legislation
designed to protect digital-video content from copyright infringement has not
been canceled.

'It's still there. There has been no official cancellation call on that yet,'
he said.
