Video-on-demand in Canada is expanding with a deal struck between Alliance
Atlantis Communications Inc. and Shaw Communications Inc.
The long-term agreement will tap Alliance's film library for Shaw's new VOD
service readying to launch this month in Calgary, Alberta. The VOD offering
comes with VCR functions including pause, rewind and fast-forward options.
'Because of the size of their library, Alliance Atlantis is our ideal partner
in this venture,' Shaw senior vice president of planning Michael D'Avella said.
'With one of Shaw's digital set-top boxes, our customers will be able to select
from Alliance Atlantis' huge library of films in the comfort of their own homes
and at their convenience.'
The lineup to be released this fall in the traditional pay-per-view window
will include recent popular movie titles such as John Q and Amelie
in September; The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and
Blade II in October; and 40 Days and 40 Nights in
