Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc. named Fox Cable Networks Group CEO Jeff
Shell co-president and chief operating officer.

Shell succeeds Peter Boylan, who resigned earlier this month.

Fox parent News Corp., which owns more than 40 percent of Gemstar, has the
right to appoint a COO. Sources said top News Corp. executives played a key role
in moving Shell over to Gemstar. Gemstar CEO Henry Yuen officially made the
appointment.

Gemstar's stock has been battered in the past month because of a delay in its
International Trade Commission case against EchoStar Communications Corp.,
Scientific-Atlanta Inc. and Pioneer New Media Technologies Inc., as well as
concerns on Wall Street about its accounting methods.

Fox Cable said there are no immediate plans to name a successor. News Corp.
president and COO Peter Chernin will oversee the cable-networks group in the
interim.
