Showtime is bringing another level of interactivity to Homeland as the premium programmer finds new ways to pair the popular series to Showtime Sync, its companion application for iPads, iPhones and LG Smart TVs.

Showtime Sync for Homeland, whose fourth season premieres via two new back-to-back episodes on this Sunday (October 5),  will let viewers share select video clips from the show as it airs via social media platforms. Showtime said this is the first time an app has made immediate clip sharing available from a connected TV.

The app, which syncs up with the show, will also provide viewers with exclusive episodic commentary from executive producer and showrunner Alex Gansa, and give viewers the ability to predict plotlines for future episodes, participate in polls and answer trivia questions, and compete against other viewers to earn points and win “custom-designed badges.”

Other Showtime Sync-enabled shows (some seasons were optimized only for the iPhone) include Ray Donovan, Masters of Sex, Penny Dreadful, Years of Living Dangerously, Californication, Nurse Jackie, Shameless, House of Lies and Episodes.

Showtime developed its companion app to sync up with original programming independent of the set-top box. In the case of the LG integration, Showtime's HTML5-based app is delivered via LG’s cloud-based LivePlus system, which uses audio fingerprinting technology to load up and trigger the interactive elements.

Because the detection occurs in the background via the HDMI connection that’s delivering the programming itself, Showtime Sync, which requires viewers to opt-in, does not have to be integrated with the set-top box, making it work with any cable, satellite or IPTV box that is authorized to receive Showtime.
