Siemens, Cingular Fund IMS Research Contest

Siemens Networks and Cingular Wireless are ponying up $100,000 in cash prizes for a competition to develop Internet-protocol-multimedia-subsystem (IMS) applications, hosted at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Siemens has equipped Georgia Tech's new third-generation/IMS lab with its full suite of IMS technologies, including IMS@vantage. IMS provides mechanisms for managing multimedia applications across wireless and wired communications networks.

"Thanks to sponsors such as Siemens Networks, the new 3G/IMS laboratory will give Georgia Tech’s students an opportunity to work with leading-edge technology in their quest to develop new and unique applications," said Ron Hutchins, associate vice provost for research and technology and chief technology officer at Georgia Tech, in a prepared statement.

Other vendors participating in the 3G/IMS laboratory include Ubiquity Software, BridgePort Networks and Azaire Networks.

The deadline for students to enter the IMS competition is Nov. 27. Winners will be announced in May. More information on the IMS research competition is available online (forgedbyims-research-competition.com).
