Sling TV is apparently providing access to ABC in select markets as part of a new “Broadcast Extra” add-on package that sells for $5 per month, according to information first spotted by Cord Cutter News.
Per Sling TV’s web site, the $5 Broadcast Extra tier also includes Univision and UniMás , and access to those local TV signals is limited to Sling TV subs who live in the following metro areas: Chicago, Fresno-Visalia, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Raleigh-Durham, and San Francisco.
Presumably, Sling TV subs who qualify for the Broadcast Extra offering would also need to subscribe to Sling TV’s core multichannel package, which sells for $20 per month. But Sling TV subs who are interested in Broadcast Extra can’t just add the package online; they are directed to call the company at 888-308-9996 to learn more.
Multichannel News has reached out to Sling TV for comment about the new add-on package.
Update: Sling TV said the markets where the new Broadcast Extra package represent more than half of the top ten designated market areas (DMAs) and serve nearly 25 percent of the U.S. population. Additionally, Broadcast Extra is available across all Sling TV-supported devices in the aforementioned, selected markets.
The addition of ABC, albeit in select markets, marks the first time Sling TV has made a U.S. Big 4 broadcast TV channel available via the OTT-TV service. The provider has long said it desired to offer major broadcast TV networks in its packages, if it was able to iron out the complicated distribution rights.
NBC, CBS and Fox have yet to join the Sling TV lineup. However, Sling TV recently launched an app on Channel Master’s DVR+ platform, a subscription-free DVR that integrates broadband connectivity (for OTT services) and over-the-air TV tuning capabilities.
