April isn't the cruelest month to be a SoapNet viewer.
The network started flashing the bulbs on its “Daytime Emmy Month” coverage this past weekend, an effort that will encompass Saturday marathons of nominated stars and shows; the debut of its The Young and the Restless acquisition; red carpet action on April 28; and a fashion recap show. In addition, SoapNet will kick off a promotional tour, giving genre wannabes a shot at a walk-on role on an ABC soap.
“April is a great month for soap fans and SoapNet is presenting its most comprehensive tribute to the Daytime Emmy Awards yet,” SoapNet general manager Deborah Blackwell said.
SoapNet's stunt began on April 1 with a marathon of Soap Talk episodes featuring Emmy nominees. On subsequent Saturdays through month's end, SoapNet will give viewers the chance to see the episodes and performances that their favorite stars submitted for voting in the various categories. In a first on April 22, those will include entries from Guiding Light and As the World Turns, which are not part of the network's day-and-date lineup.
“We're very appreciative to CBS and Proctor & Gamble [Co.] for this courtesy,” said Blackwell. “It will give soap fans a little taste for being inside.”
After acquiring the rights from Sony Pictures Television last month, SoapNet on April 24 will premiere the day-and-date encores of Y&R at 7 p.m.
The network will provide a two-hour red carpet coverage show prior to the awards ceremony at the Kodak Theater on April 28; the network has three nominations of its own.
The post-show, SoapNet: Daytime Emmys … Unzipped, airing May 1 at 11 p.m. (ET/PT) will critique the best and most outlandish outfits.
On April 28, SoapNet, working with Time Warner Cable, will rev up promotional tour, “I Wanna Be A Soap Star Live!” in Austin, Texas. The other five stops running through June 2 in markets serviced by Time Warner, Comcast Corp. and Insight Communications Co., will also give participants a chance to compete for a chance to win a walk-on role on an ABC soap. That also serves as a lead up to the third season of SoapNet's reality series I Wanna Be A Soap Star.
In addition to the talent search, tour visitors can get autographs from soap celebrities, receive makeovers and headshots and partake in stage shows and pick up premiums from national sponsors, including Venus Disposable Razors and Nestle Stixx.
