Akamai Technologies, which operates an Internet-content-delivery network, announced Tuesday that both Sony Computer Entertainment and Nintendo are using its content-delivery services for their respective game-console platforms.

For Sony, Akamai is handling content distribution for the PlayStation Network, which lets PlayStation 3 console owners play online games with up to 40 players simultaneously.

Nintendo is using Akamai to deliver Wii Virtual Console gaming content to subscribers around the world.

"The demand for gaming content is growing rapidly, and Akamai is excited to work with leaders such as Nintendo on the content-distribution infrastructure for its brand-new Wii system," Akamai CEO Paul Sagan said in a prepared statement.
