A potential sale of Major League Baseball's Florida
Marlins may have gone down in flames last week over the length of the team's cable
rights with SportsChannel Florida.
Media magnate Wayne Huizenga has apparently pulled out of
negotiations to sell the Marlins to Florida commodities trader and New York Yankees
minority owner John Henry.
Huizenga was unable to secure a long-term, multiyear
television deal for the team with SC Florida, in which he holds a 70 percent interest,
sources close to the situation said.
Huizenga has been negotiating with Cablevision Systems
Corp. to sell his share of the network, and a long-term deal would increase its sales
value. If Cablevision reacquires SC Florida, it could open the door for Fox Sports Net to
distribute its event and news programming into the Florida marketplace.
Representatives from Cablevision would only say that it
"does not comment on rumors regarding potential transactions."
Representatives from SC Florida could not be reached for
comment at press time.
