Sprint Nextel Corp. customers can use their mobile phones to locate nearby restaurants, movies and even friends and family thanks to a new subscription location-search service unveiled Monday.

Sprint Nextel and technology partner InfoSpace Inc. are offering the “InfoSpace Find It” application on more than 20 Sprint code-division-multiple-access and Nextel “iDEN” phones for $2.99 monthly.

The application uses automated global-positioning-system technology to pinpoint the user’s position and then cross-references that to address listings for nearby restaurants, movie theaters or other business services nearby. It also can search White Pages, Yellow Pages, maps and directions databases.

"This innovation provides on-the-move Sprint customers with one application to find relevant local information, and it is GPS-enabled to most efficiently answer the question, 'What's around me now?'" said Alana Muller, Sprint’s director of product marketing for information and applications.
