Leonard Nimoy, best known as Spock from the various Star Trek, franchises has died at the age of 83.

Nimoy’s wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed his death to The New York Times, saying the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Nimoy had been battling the disease for a year.

Nimoy starred as the emotionless Vulcan on the original version of Star Trek, which ran for three seasons in the late 1960s on NBC,, before moving into syndication and then morphing into multiple films.

Most recently, Nimoy reprised his role as Spock in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 rebooted big screen version Star Trek and its sequel Star Trek Into Darkness in 2013.
