Research group In-Stat/MDR (a sister company to Multichannel News)
predicted that service providers will have 6 million home-network subscriptions
by 2006, a huge leap from the several-hundred-thousand as of the end of
2002.

The key to achieving that penetration is educating consumers on the benefits
of home-networking services from broadband providers.

"Showing the benefits of extended connectivity is key," said Mike Wolf,
director with In-Stat/MDR. "The major hurdle for the service provider will be
figuring out the business model through which to monetize the home network and
associated services."

Digital-music applications will be one content application that will help to
drive interest in home networking, the study suggested.
