Despite all of the talk about video-on-demand, HDTV and digital-video recorders, a new study from In-Stat/MDR (a sister company to Multichannel News
) suggested that worldwide digital set-top sales will shrink slightly in 2003 to 9.97 million from last year's 10.03 million units.
In-Stat expects the market to grow only marginally next year, to 10 million-11 million.
But any growth is coming from new featured set-tops. In-Stat said 800,000 DVR set-tops were shipped in 2003, a tenfold growth over 2002's 80,000.
Scientific-Atlanta Inc. has been a big beneficiary from its DVR and HDTV set-top sales to Time Warner Cable and others, with In-Stat saying its worldwide digital market share rose from 31% last year to 40% in 2003.
