STMicroelectronics Debuts New Chip

STMicroelectronics is releasing a new Moving Picture Expert Group chip decoder for standard-definition set-tops, the “STM5105,” which the company said reduces costs while adding functionality.

STM said the clock speed in the new chip has doubled to 200 megahertz. The chip also features a 2-D graphics engine, digital-video-broadcasting descramblers and support for a single-tuner digital-video recorder.

The vendor said the chip will be priced at $7 in quantities of 100,000, with volume production slated for the second quarter.

In other news, C-COR Inc. announced the availability of a full suite of 1-gigahertz bandwidth hybrid fiber-coaxial access products for headend optics, nodes and amplifiers.

Products include the “CHP Max5000” converged headend platform with advanced 1-GHz transmitters, the “OptiMax4100” 1-GHz nodes, the “Flex Max901” trunk and bridger amplifiers and the “Flex Max 331” line extenders.
