The percentage of U.S. homes with HD-capable TV sets is up to 12% from 7% a year ago, and consumers spent an average of about $1,600 for HDTV sets over the past year, down from $2,400 a year earlier, a new report from Leichtman Research Group Inc. indicated.

Price reductions have spurred the growing sales of HDTV sets -- principally by men, who make the HDTV purchase decisions 82% of the time -- principal analyst Bruce Leichtman said.

Other factoids: 89% of U.S. adults have heard of HDTV, 18% of current HDTV owners are likely to get another HD set in the next year and 11% of non-HDTV owners expressed some likelihood to buy an HDTV set in the next year if it costs $1,000.

LRG surveyed 1,300 homes throughout the country to create a study on the topic for the third year in a row.
