Knowledge Networks/SRI announced Monday that its latest "Home Technology
Monitor" study found that interactive program guides are more prevalent and more
influential than the much-publicized personal video recorders.
IPGs are "almost 30 times more prevalent" than PVRs, the research firm said,
noting that the guides are available in 27 percent of television homes versus
PVRs' 1 percent penetration.
The guides, moreover, represent "a key factor in consumer decisions to
subscribe to a particular digital satellite or cable service," the research firm
said, adding that 80 percent of those in IPG households use the guide daily and
that 52 percent say that technology has reduced their channel-surfing time.
Knowledge Networks acquired Statistical Research Inc. in 2001, creating
