Sun Microsystems Inc. said it has made an equity investment in Canal Plus
U.S. Technologies, strengthening the ties between two companies working toward
open standards for interactive cable set-top software.
Sun did not disclose how much money it will put into Canal Plus, but sources
close to the situation tagged it as in the neighborhood of $20 million.
In connection with investment, Canal Plus said it will license Sun's
Java-based technology to create an 'end-to-end' interactive-TV system based on
its 'MediaHighway' middleware. Specifically, Canal Plus will port Sun's
'PersonalJava' platform, 'Solaris' operating environment and 'Cluster 3.0'
Both companies said the relationship centers on a commitment to build open
standards based on Java technology for the United States and abroad.
Sun and Canal Plus are contributing to a Cable Television Laboratories Inc.
