SureWest Communications has rolled out BigBand Networks' switched digital video system in its Kansas City, Mo., region, helping the telecommunications provider add 50 HD channels to its lineup and roll out IPTV and other new services.
Roseville, Calif.-based SureWest offers voice, Internet and TV services in the greater Sacramento region as well as Kansas City and Missouri. The company has about 105,100 residential and 7,900 business customers.
With the BigBand SDV system, SureWest has freed up bandwidth to deliver IPTV, data and other services to traditional TVs and IP-connected devices in subscribers' homes.
"In addition to meeting our needs for HD expansion, BigBand's SDV solution helps us stay competitive and paves the way for us to support a broader base of connected devices, including PCs, mobile devices, IP set-top boxes and tablets," SureWest chief technology officer Ken Johnson said.
BigBand is in the process of being acquired by Arris in a deal worth $53 million, which Arris anticipates closing around Nov. 21.
Other operators that have deployed BigBand's SDV system include Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications, Charter Communications and Cablevision Systems.
