DirecTV Inc. has ordered the third phase of Tandberg Television’s MPEG-4 (Moving Picture Expert Group) AVC (Advanced Video Compression) HD-compression systems, the vendor said Friday.

The direct-broadcast satellite provider’s order was valued at more than $7 million. DirecTV will use Tandberg’s MPEG-4 AVC HDTV video headend, which includes the vendor’s “EN5990” encoders in a fully redundant system complete with its “Reflex” statistical-multiplexing software.

“We are delighted that our MPEG-4 AVC systems are playing such a pivotal role in DirecTV's ground-breaking deployment and believe the investment DirecTV has made in Tandberg Television technology is a clear indicator of our strong position in the HD video-compression market," Tandberg CEO Eric Cooney said in a prepared statement.
