TCM, Hermès Like Short Shorts

Turner Classic Movies is partnering with French luxury retailer Hermès on a shorts festival this fall.

The vintage-film network and Hermès are working with six current filmmakers -- including Griffin Dunne (Addicted to Love), Peter Gilbert (Hoop Dreams) and Floria Sigismondi (music videos for the White Stripes and David Bowie) -- to create shorts for the festival. The filmmakers have been charged with creating a short that pays homage to film classics.

The new entries will premiere Sept. 22 on TCM’s “Behind the Camera: The Shorts Circuit,” which also will showcase shorts from the likes of Martin Scorsese (What’s a Nice Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This), Francois Truffaut (Les Mistons), Stanly Kubrick (Day of Flight) and Alfred Hitchcock (Bon Voyage), among others.

Subsequently, viewers will be able to screen these and other shorts at Hermès Online Gallery (www.hermes.com), which will also house commentary from the directors. Plans call for the upscale retailer to complement the debut of its online gallery with conventional screenings in New York and Los Angeles in September, as well, according to a TCM spokeswoman.

“Short films have been an important staple of filmmaking since the industry began more than a century ago,” said Tom Karsch, executive vice president and general manager for TCM, in a prepared statement. “We are honored to be working with Hermès on this very special tribute to short filmmaking and to be able to offer six brand-new short films that pay homage to this unheralded cinematic art.”
