Faulty information sent over EchoStar Communication Corp.'s satellite network has torpedoed service for a small number of DISH Network customers.

The problem cropped up Thursday morning, when a failed piece of equipment in EchoStar's uplink center sent faulty information over the satellite network, according to EchoStar spokesman Marc Lumpkin.

Estimates are the problem affected about 100,000 of EchoStar's 7.46 million customer base.

"We believe we have resolved the problem," Lumpkin said. "It does require customers to call us to have their service reactivated. Once they call in it may take several hours to get reactivated."

The DBS operator hopes to have all customers reactivated by the end of the day today.
