DirecTV Inc.’s three telco partners -- Verizon Communications Inc., BellSouth Corp. and Qwest Communications International Inc. -- accounted for 670,000 of the direct-broadcast satellite company’s 1.2 million subscriber additions in 2005, a huge jump over the corresponding 2004 figures of 190,000 additions of DirecTV’s 1.7 million total.
But DirecTV executives don’t think that trend will continue. At the company’ analysts’ day meeting last week, CEO Chase Carey said he expects the telcos to represent 20% or so of additions in the next few years because of their own wireline-video offerings.
“The buildout will occur over a long period of time,” he added. “It will take a while to get out there.”
