Texas Instruments Inc. has a new family of chip products that it said will bring TV to the cellular screen more easily.
Shipping now to mobile-handset-manufacturing customers, the “Hollywood” digital-TV single-chip line is the first in the industry to combine a mobile-TV tuner and demodulator on a single piece of silicon, according to TI.
The first chip in the line is the “DTV1000,” which supports the Digital Video Broadcast-Handheld (DVB-H) standard. DVB-H is now in development in the United States by Modeo LLC, a newly rebranded subsidiary of satellite-tower provider Crown Castle International Corp.
A sister chip, the “DTV1001,” will support the Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting-Terrestrial (ISDB-T) standard being deployed in Japan.
The first mobile phones sporting both chips are expected to debut late this year.
