In a marketing test, Time Warner Cable is offering customers who pony up for its high-end 50-Mbps Wideband broadband service -- $99.95 per month as a standalone product -- a rebate on the purchase of a Slingbox Pro-HD.
EchoStar Technologies' Slingbox Pro-HD attaches to a set-top box, then "slings" the video signal to PCs or mobile devices over the Internet. TWC's Wideband service currently provides unlimited data usage with 50 Mbps downstream and 5 Mbps upstream.
To qualify for the promotion, TWC customers in the Big Apple must purchase a Slingbox Pro-HD from Best Buy between Sept. 26 and Nov. 30, 2011. After submitting proof of purchase, customers will receive $50 off their monthly bill for six months.
Also eligible for the Slingbox promotion are New York City subscribers who have the $200-per-month SignatureHome bundle as well as current Wideband customers.
"We are excited to partner with Best Buy to provide customers with this added incentive to purchase our Wideband service," said David Gray, regional vice president of marketing for Time Warner Cable's East Region. "With the Slingbox Pro-HD our customers can use the speed and bandwidth provided by Wideband 50 to access their video programming wherever they are."
Time Warner Cable hasn't disclosed how many customers take the 50-Mbps tier. Across its footprint, the operator added 25,000 Wideband customers in the second quarter. TWC said subscribers to Wideband and Turbo (15 Mbps downstream) comprised more than 17% of its residential high-speed Internet users as of the end of June 2011.
Slingbox Pro-HD purchases made through any other retailer or from a Best Buy location outside of the 11 New York City stores participating in the promotion will not qualify for the offer. To claim the offer online, customers must upload a scanned copy of the Best Buy or BestBuy.com receipt showing purchase of a Slingbox Pro-HD during the promotion period and the total amount paid for the Slingbox Pro-HD and must provide an active Time Warner Cable account number at time of registration.
