Engineers at Time Warner Cable's South Carolina and Syracuse, N.Y., divisions
took top honors in the third annual Cable and Broadband Security Case Study
Competition, sponsored by the Broadband & Internet Security Task Force.
Austin Coates won the award in South Carolina for a three-phase plan to stop
signal theft. The program educated consumers and local law enforcement about
cable theft. Through a "Theft of Service Hot Line," Time Warner confiscated
1,000 illegal decoders and recovered $377,000 from 312 criminal cases.
In Syracuse, Geff Dennee won the honors for a new audit program that found
the conversion rate of unauthorized viewers to be more than 28 percent, which
resulted in $196,600 in unclaimed monthly revenue.
