‘Tin Man’ Sets Sci Fi Miniseries Mark

The Tin Man took out Taken.

Sci Fi Channel’s take on L. Frank Baum’s Wonderful Wizard of Oz became the most-watched miniseries event in the network’s history, eclipsing previous Emmy-winning events, Steven Spielberg Presents Taken and Frank Herbert’s Dune.

Over its Dec. 2 through Dec. 4 run, Tin Man averaged a 3.6 household rating, 3.4 million households and 5.3 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research live, plus same-day data. The audience total included 2.9 million adults 25 to 54 and 2.7 adults 18 to 49. 


The first installment was Sci Fi's most-watched show ever, drawing 6.3 million viewers. The second night garnered 4.4 million viewers on averate and the last some 5 million.

For its part, Taken posted a 4.1 household rating for its 10 two-hour installments, with some 5 million viewers tuning in on average during its premiere run from Dec. 2-13, 2002, while the three-part Dune drove a 4.4 rating and 4.6 million viewers on average in December 2000, according to Nielsen data.

Sci Fi will encore the miniseries, produced by RHI and starring Zooey Deschanel, Alan Cumming, Neal McDonough, Kathleen Robertson, Raoul Trujillo and Richard Dreyfuss, in its entirety on Sunday, Dec. 9 from 5 p.m. through 11 p.m. (ET/PT).
