TiVo Inc. said it is slashing the price for its “TiVo Series2” digital-video-recorders to just $99 through a promotion that expires Aug. 20.
The move may help TiVo to compete with cable and satellite providers, most of which charge $10 or more monthly to lease DVRs.
Under the promotion, the suggested retail price for its 40-hour TiVo Series2 DVR is $99, while the 80-hour box costs $199 and the 140-hour version will run $249. The company’s Humax USA 40-hour DVD recorder with TiVo costs $299, and the 80-hour DVD recorder with TiVo costs $399.
TiVo said it is also offering new customers two free months of service if they activate the DVRs by July 31. After the promotional period expires, the monthly subscription fee will cost $12.95.
