The NBA, TNT and Cinedigm Digital Cinema is bringing the league's All-Star Saturday Night program to a theater near you -- in 3D HD.
Tipping off at 8 p.m. (ET) on Valentine's Day, the live 3D HD event will be shown at up to 80 theaters on 160 screens in Carmike Cinemas, Celebration Cinemas, Cinema West, Emagine, Galaxy Theatres, Marquee Cinemas, MJR, NCG, Rave Motion Pictures, Showcase and UltraStar Cinema locations.
All told, fans in 35 states will have access to the action for $15 to $25 per ticket, according to an NBA spokesman.
For the money, fans will be able to check out the Haier Shooting Stars, featuring the 2008 champion Team San Antonio of David Robinson, Tim Duncan and Becky Hammon; the Playstation Skills Challenge, with reigning king Utah Jazz guard Deron Williams; the Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout and its defending sharpshooter, Toronto Raptors forward Jason Kapono; and the Sprite Slam Dunk, showcasing last year's superman of slam Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard.
The theater telecast of All-Star Saturday Night -- the 2008 version was TNT's tops with 5.2 million viewers and demo delivery during its 23 years of coverage -- continues the NBA's 3D HD push. The league has already held special viewing parties for the 2007 All-Star Game; Game 2 of the 2007 Finals in the Quicken Loans Arena, where 14,000 fans watched the Cleveland Cavaliers battle the San Antonio Spurs on four, 60-foot screens; and the Dallas Mavericks delivery of a game at the Landmark Theater in their hometown before 500 fans.
For its part, the NFL made its Dec. 4 Thursday Night Football game between the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders available to a select number of theaters in HD.
"Turner Sports is excited to work with Cinedigm to extend our brand, as well as that of NBA All-Star Weekend, into a new arena through this creative and innovative viewing opportunity." said David Levy, president of Turner Broadcasting Sales, Inc. and Turner Sports, in a statement. "We are proud to once again be on the cutting edge in providing NBA fans with a truly unique and comprehensive 3D viewing experience during NBA All-Star Weekend. This partnership demonstrates that Turner continues to provide new and innovative concepts for NBA fans to enhance the viewing experience."
