TNT Sets First Reality Series

TNT will step into the reality competition arena with the summer debut of The Great Escape.

The 10-episode series, which counts as executive producers Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind), Brian Grazer (24), Francie Calfo (Scoundrels), Elise Doganieri (The Amazing Race), Bertram van Munster (The Amazing Race), Justin Hochberg and Charlie Ebersol, will each week pit three pairs of players against each other as they attempt to escape from such locations as a seven-story castle, a deserted island, a sinking ship or a maximum security prison, said network officials.

The series marks the first competition/reality series from the "drama" network, which is known mostly for one-hour scripted crime series such as The Closer, Rizzoli and Isles and Leverage. The network last month returned to the original movie genre for the first time since 2009 with a series of tele-films based on best-selling crime novels.

"The Great Escape is a fast-paced series with all the heart-pounding excitement and nail-biting suspense of a summer popcorn movie," said Michael Wright, executive vice president, head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM) in a prepared statement. "This is exactly the kind of fun, smart, unscripted competition show we've been looking for to complement TNT's entertaining lineup of scripted dramas."
