Turner Network Television will run a pair of marathons around two of
America's biggest holidays: New Year's Day and Super Bowl Sunday.
Actually, TNT's New Year's celebration kicks off Friday with a five-day stunt
featuring films from its 'Saturday Night New Classics' franchise.
The marathon begins at 8 p.m. with The Mask (Jim Carrey and Cameron
Diaz) and concludes Jan. 1 with a presentation of Cocktail (Tom Cruise
and Elisabeth Shue) at 8 p.m.
In between, TNT will showcase movies crossing a variety of genres from As
Good as It Gets and L.A. Confidential to The Breakfast Club
and Conan the Barbarian.
While two teams will battle for the National Football League diadem during
Super Bowl XXXVI in the New Orleans Superdome, TNT will present programming
about a conflict of a far different kind: the U.S. Civil War between the Union
and the Confederacy.
For those seeking an alternative to pigskin action, the network will roll out
original miniseries Gettysburg Feb. 3 at noon.
At 6 p.m., TNT will counterprogram the 'Big Game' itself with the 1939
Academy Award-winning Gone with the Wind, before capping matters with
another miniseries, Andersonville, which tells the story of a Confederate
