Universal Television & Networks Group has named not just veteran ad
executive Dan Rank, but three former TV-network executives to new ad-sales
In reorganizing, UTNG president of ad sales Jeff Lucas said Wednesday evening
that he is consolidating its sales-contact process and emphasizing program
sponsorships and cross-platform deals.
Lucas confirmed that Rank, managing director of broadcast TV at Omnicom Group
Inc.'s OMD USA media-buying operation, has decided to go from buying time to
selling time as Chicago-based executive vice president of ad sales for UTNG.
Rank, who will report to Lucas effective Dec. 2, will oversee the Chicago
office and the company's 'outside offices' -- meaning Detroit and Los
Lucas said he's also made several other key sales appointments, but he added
that they don't replace anyone.
He explained that the additions were inspired by agency complaints that 'too
many people call on them,' which should be alleviated by his having its sales
force pitching several networks (USA Network, Sci Fi Channel, Trio and NewsWorld
International) rather than just one, as well as by its intent to pursue
integrated or cross-media deals.
For the latter, Lucas tapped Kevin McAuliffe as senior VP of cross-platform
initiatives. He was formerly affiliate-marketing senior VP at Gemstar-TV Guide
International Inc. and, earlier, held marketing posts at News Corp. and NBC.
In other appointments, Lucas named Mike Tedone executive VP of national
sales. His 13 years at NBC most recently included VP of pricing and
And Lloyd Schloss was named senior VP of operations, after having been VP of
pricing and planning at UPN.
