Univision Communications and Time Warner Cable have inked a far-reaching renewal contract that also provides for the launch of a quartet of new cable services.
The multiyear, multiplatform pact, financial terms of which were not disclosed, will provide berths for Univision’s dedicated sports, news and novella cable networks on Time Warner Cable and Bright House Network systems. Moreover, the MSOs will carry Robert Rodriguez's El Rey Network, when it launches later this year.
The deal, which the parties said came ahead of any immediate expirations of their extant affiliate agreement, also covers extensions for Univision’s flagship broadcast and cable networks – Univision Network, UniMás, Galavisión, De Película, De Película Clásico, Bandamax, Ritmoson, Telehit and Distrito Comedia. Retransmission-consent renewal for Univision owned-and-operated stations in the MSOs’ footprints are also covered.
Under the contract, Time Warner Cable’s customers will also gain access to content for digital platforms and VOD, which includes additional “TV Everywhere” fare for TWC TV’s out-of-home platforms and authenticated access to Univision’s UVideos and Univision Deportes digital properties.
Moreover, Time Warner Cable and Univision’s Television Group have reached a first-of-its-kind local news partnership to better serve Hispanic audiences in Los Angeles, New York and other shared markets.
Univision Deportes Network and Univision tlNovelas will be available this week on Time Warner Cable and Bright House systems in most Univision markets. TWC and Bright House -- the former negotiates programming deals for the latter -- join DirecTV, Dish, Cox, Cablevision, AT&T U-verse and Verizon FiOS in offering the sports and novella networks, as well as news channel, FOROtv.
Created and programmed by filmmaker Rodriguez and FactoryMade Ventures, El Rey is a fledgling English-language entertainment cable network geared toward young-adult audiences; it is slated to launch at year-end.
