U.S. Digital Television Inc. will use fifth-generation 8-VSB (vestigial sideband) chips and ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) tuners from LG Electronics and LG Innotek in its set-tops, the company announced Tuesday.
Over-the-air subscription-TV service USDTV reached a technology partnership with the two vendors, under which LG components will be included in set-tops for USDTV beginning in the fourth quarter, USDTV said.
“LG's chip advances will make over-the-air digital-TV reception easier for millions of viewers, and this is a critical milestone for our company and our broadcast partners," USDTV chairman and CEO Steve Lindsley said in a prepared statement.
“The continued evolution of reception technology, coupled with tremendous improvements in compression and storage, will help broadcasters to compete for pay TV revenues well into the future,” he added.
USDTV launched in the Salt Lake City market in December, and it plans to be in 30 markets nationwide by year-end.
