Verizon Communications reported 306,000 digital-subscriber-line additions in the fourth quarter of 2004, giving the telco 3.1 million DSL subscribers overall.
The 306,000 additions represented a large jump over the fourth quarter of 2003's 203,000 but a slight decrease, sequentially, from third-quarter 2004's 310,000.
The company said it is passing 35,000-40,000 homes per week with its fiber-to-the-home “FiOS” project. The fiber build -- which allows Verizon to offer high-speed data at speeds as high as 30 megabits per second downstream -- is available to 100,000 subscribers in several markets. In Keller, Texas, Verizon said FiOS penetration is 20%.
The company said video trials over the FTTH architecture are under way and market launches will begin in the second half of the year.
