Verizon Communications Inc.’s Verizon FiOS TV video product will be heading for the beach in California.
On Dec. 13, the city council in Hermosa Beach, Calif., voted to approve a cable franchise for the telephone company. This will be the company’s fourth cable franchise in the state, and its first in Los Angeles County. None of the California video operations have been activated as yet.
The approval is not complete, however. California councils stage a first and second reading of municipal ordinances, to allow for corrections that may become apparent after the first approval vote. The council will have to take a final vote in January.
Verizon will compete with Time Warner Cable, which is acquiring the Adelphia Communications Corp. system in the town of 10,000.
The 15-year franchise requires Verizon to serve every dwelling in town within 125 feet of Verizon’s trunk lines.
