Village trustees in Massapequa Park, N.Y., may vote Sept. 26 on a franchise for Verizon Communications Inc., which could make it the first New York community to franchise the telco's move into cable.
The trustees held a public hearing Sept. 12, during which residents expressed support for a competitive provider. Another 19 letters of support were delivered to village offices, according to the clerk.
Common practice calls for a vote on the issue during the next regular meeting following the public hearing. That meeting is scheduled later this month.
The pact under consideration would give Verizon operating authority for 10 years, with an option for a five-year extension. If Verizon is approved, it will provide video services in competition with Cablevision Systems Corp.
Massapequa Park has a population of about 17,500.
