Verizon Communications said it will establish a local video-hub office in the Pittsburgh area to enable delivery of its Verizon FiOS TV service across western Pennsylvania.

The regional Bell operating company said the VHO will receive national programming via fiber-optic lines from its two superheadend facilities.

Inside the office, staffed around the clock, employees will monitor video and audio quality and insert local programming like local TV and PEG-access (public, educational and government) channels, then send the signals to subscribers' homes over Verizon's all-fiber network.

“With this hub, Verizon could begin to offer video competition in western Pennsylvania late next year,” Verizon Pennsylvania president William B. Petersen said in a prepared statement.

In other Verizon FiOS TV news, the Town Board of Eastchester, N.Y., in Westchester County, unanimously approved a video franchise for the telco.
