Verizon Stitches FiOS Apps Together

Verizon has melded entertainment, remote control, customer service and home monitoring capabilities of several different apps for FiOS customers into a single "My FiOS" app.

Initially My FiOS is available only for Android devices, with a version for Apple iPhone and iPad slated for release by the end of 2011. "The one ring to rule them all," one user posted in the review section on Android Marketplace.

In addition to consolidating all of the current FiOS apps Verizon has released, it "paves the way for easy access to dozens of new remote applications" currently in development by the telco and its content provider partners, the company said.

My FiOS provides access to features available in: FiOS Mobile Remote, which includes DVR manager; Verizon's recently announced Home Monitoring and Control service; Media Manager, for personal content; and Flex View, for watching purchased or rented movies and TV shows. Users also can access FiOS Digital Voice, FiOS Internet and DSL services.

"As our selection of remote applications continues to grow along with the number of connectible devices, customers face potential confusion over what mobile applications to use and where to find them," Eric Bruno, Verizon vice president of product management, said in a statement. He added that My FiOS can educate customers about apps "they may not even realize are there to help them."

The 918-Kilobyte My FiOS app for Android provides a main menu with links to specific app functions; a shortcut tray with links to full versions of the supported Verizon mobile device applications; controls at the bottom of each screen to navigate operations; and a rotating carousel at the top of the screen with information on various aspects of the app.

The top third of the My FiOS screen also gives Verizon real estate to promote premium services and options to customers.

The My FiOS app was announced Tuesday at the Emerging Technologies Conference at MIT during a presentation by Shadman Zafar, senior vice president of product development for Verizon.

Verizon is scheduled to report third-quarter 2011 results Friday, Oct. 21.
