Thursday night’s 2003 MTV Video Music Awards was the highest-rated basic-cable show of the year among people aged 12-34.

The event -- the 20th-anniversary iteration, in which videos starring Coldplay, Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé Knowles took three “moon man” statues apiece -- averaged a 9.9 rating among the aforementioned demo from 8 p.m.-11
p.m.

The show, the highest-rated in cable or broadcast that night, posted an 8.1 household mark, down from the 8.3 registered by the 19th VMA program on MTV: Music Television Aug. 29, 2002.
